The first of 5 Essential Questions

Are we sustainable as a school? As a community? As a society? On a national level? On a global level?

As of the world condition now and the way it will be for many years to come The conclusion can be drawn to determine that the school, community, and world, etc, is not sustainable.
Because of the constant need to expand, and get the latest technology, there will be the need to burn fossil fuels in order to carry out these functions. Even walking to school. Some say that it is sustainable, it is more then riding in a car, but if you ate bread in the morning that bread came from a processed plant that burns fossil fuels to run. Therefore in an environment, from as small as a room, to as big as the world. Anything that involves movement or using an object is not sustainable.

I think we try to be sustainable as a school. I know we have a recycling program, but not many people participate. Also, we had a dress down day to raise money for planting trees. So we are doing a few things but I think we could do better. As for the community, society, national and global level, I really don't know enough to state an opinion. My guess would be that we are not sustainable because global warming is still a problem and the world population is increasing exponentially.

As a school I do not think we are the most sustainable. Though we fancy ourselves to be sustainable, and some students act out at certain times by turning out lights, recycling, and composting, the majority of the students and the majority of the time we are not sustainable. Today at locker cleanout people were using recycling bins as trash cans, throwing in metal and plastic object, as well as some odds and ends. If we were serious about recycling we would care to remove these materials before throwing them in the recycling bin. In order for there to be enough compost for the compost bin in the cafecteria, there need to be more children who eat fruit so there are cores and peels to compost. And in reality, turining out the lights for a couple minutes spiratically during the school year doesn't help as much as we would like to believe. As a community I think since more people are involved, we are able to be more sustainable; there are more people to add input to sustainable living. As a society I believe the same thing. On a global level, we are not very sustainable; all the small things adding up that aren't sustainable outweigh the things that are, causing global warming. So technically if we are not sustainable on a global level we are not sustainable on any other level.
